Jason Short with an AR-15

Kodiak 4H High Power Rifle Shooting takes place in the summer months of June, July and August. We shoot every Monday night from 7:00 PM until about 9:00PM. All of our practices take place at the 500 yard Salonie Creek Rifle Range.

For rifles the club has 6 AR15 match rifles. The kids can use one of our rifles or can use one of their own. The requirements are that it must be safe, hold at least five rounds in the magazine, and have iron sights. The AR15 rifle is really an excellant choice because it is lite weight, durable, and capable of excellent accuracy.

Our course of fire is:

  1. Twenty shots standing in twenty minutes at 200 yards.
  2. Ten shots sitting in 60 seconds at 200 yards. Two magazines must be used, 8 rounds in the 1st one and 2 rounds in the 2nd one.
  3. Ten shots prone in 70 seconds at 300 yards. Two magazines must be used, 8 rounds in the 1st magazine and 2 rounds in the 2nd magazine.
  4. Twenty shots prone in 20 minutes at 500 yards.

The above distances are the actual course distances. Most of our practices will be shot at reduced targets at 100 yards. We do this in the interest of time.

Our goal is to shoot 20 rounds every night. One night we will do the standing slowfire and kneeling rapid fire twice. The next night we will do the prone slowfire course and the prone rapid fire course twice.

As with all 4-H shooting activities safety is our number one concern. Part of this is protecting the participants hearing and seeing. Every student must bring ear and eye protection every night and they must be worn whenever shooting is taking place. And don't forget your mosquito repellant!
